Ireland, the Blackwater Lodge

We’ve now made the cost of salmon fishing....

.....so low, you hardly need waders!

With the worldwide recession, fishery owners, lodges and guides across the globe are reducing their charges so that salmon anglers can keep fishing and new anglers can be attracted to the sport.

In Ireland, the Blackwater Lodge - in conjunction with its beat owners - is leading the way by now making salmon fishing more affordable for everyone.

Cast your eye on this...............
For the 2013 season, fishing rates on the Lodge beats will range from €15 per day to €80 per day in the prime time. Some of these rates reflect a reduction on 2012 prices of over 50%.

Best Day of 2012 - September 2

The water was falling & clearing from the most recent flood, we recorded the Best Day so far this year with 19 fish to 12lb. caught for 16 rod days.

Two anglers had 4 each on fly, including a 12 pounder & another had 3 to 11.4lb which was his Personal Best. 10 in total fell to fly.

In the last 2 days, large numbers of fish have been seen running on both the upper & lower river, but they are surprisingly reluctant to take.

September 2nd. also registered another landmark -  we passed 400 fish for the season on that day!

Second Best Fish on September 4

12_koch_151
On the 3rd., seven fish were caught including this fine 10.7 pounder which was taken on fly on our lowest beat ~3 miles downstream of the Lodge by Peter Duggan from Co. Tipperary.

12_koch_152
Yesterday (4th.) 80 years young Ken Tucker from Carlow landed this fine 17.2lb fish on Kents all on his own - some achievement!

It is the biggest fish he has caught for many years!

The Catch Total for September (to the 5th.) is 38 fish to 17.2lb. for 54 rod days. The Season total is now 420.

The Storm before the Calm..............?

The weather has hit us one more time, but it looks as if things are set to improve by the end of the week.

Yet another weather system came through last night & in the early morning, bringing us 23mm rain.

ProspectsIt finally looks as if we are in for a period of settled weather from now on with warm, dry sunny weather now forecast at least into the beginning of next week.

With the huge head of fish (particularly in the upper river) which has run in with all the high water, the prospects for sport are superb as soon as conditions settle.

Just 6 weeks of the season remaining! We have availability of rods and accommodation for September & also for the season extension to October 12 - which is of course fly only - C&R.

12_koch_150
Although conditions were not ideal, Sigi Hummelsberger from Germany had 2 fish including this 12 pounder which he released alive.

The catch total for August is 92 fish to 13.9lb. for 130 rod days to the 29th. The season total is now 379

Worthwhile Causes  This one was brought to my attention by Mark Wilson from Belfast.

Save the Dollaghan
Northern Ireland is home to the biggest fresh water lough in Britain and Ireland, Lough Neagh. It is a Lough that contains fish that are unique and indigenous to its water. One of these fish is the Dollaghan, a species of trout that demands better attention from the people who have charge over its protection. The Dollaghan run the lough Neagh tributaries to spawn from June until November and are a natural resource that should be treasured.

But the existence of these fish is seriously in danger due to the rise in illegal netting on Lough Neagh, and unless steps are taken to preserve and properly protect this iconic game fish, we have the real possibility of losing a rare and precious species of trout. This cannot be allowed to happen. The potential of the Lough Neagh system is huge and must be nurtured.

Please sign this petition to have the issue of illegal netting of the Lough addressed by the people who have it in their power to protect and preserve the Dollaghan for the generations to come. Thank you for taking the time to visit this page, and God bless.

The fish are certainly here. Shouldn't you be too?

With more than 300 salmon caught so far this season

With more than 300 salmon caught so far this season, we had 153 in July alone, the second-best total in nine years.

The weather hasn't been kind, yet the fish were there and taking. And they continue to do so. So maybe it's time you took a second look at the fantastic, exclusive waters guests at only our Lodge enjoy.

Fly, spinning and worm are all allowed, increasing your chances of a great fish - whatever the weather.

Contact us today, while we still have accommodation and fishing available. And enjoy the Olympic standard fishing of 2012.

Mark Allsop (UK) with a fine very fresh fish of ~12lb. taken on spinner on the Castle Flat at Ballyhooly.
He caught six fish there on the 6th. - all released

His gillie Mike releases the same 12 pounder safely. Monday, August 6

We pass the 300 Salmon mark for the Season!
August started rather slowly with a blank on the 1st., 5 on the 2nd. & 6 on the 3rd. Then we had yet another flood & no fishing on the 4th. & 5th. due to coloured water.Nine anglers caught their First Ever Salmon including 16 yr. old Dan Kadlubowski (UK) & James O'Keeffe (Ireland) who both had fish of 13lb. Another 16 yr. old - Jack Thomas (Wales) had  his First Three Salmon all to 9.5lb. all in one morning.

Total Catch for One Day Record for 2012 shattered..........On Monday, August 6, the river was starting to fine down though conditions were far from ideal as the water was still quite coloured.Notwithstanding the conditions, the record catch for one day for the 2012 season was shattered yesterday with 18 fish to 13.9lb. being caught. The previous Best Day was 11 fish on June 6 & July 18.One rod caught (& released) 6 fish to 12lb. on an upper beat, & another 2 rods also recorded 6 fish to 12.9m on a lower beat.

Brilliant July Fishing as the Rains still continue!

Blackwater Lodge (AKA Noah's Ark) Newsletter - July 13, 2012

Some quality Fish

This is probably the Largest Ever First Salmon that has been caught on the Lodge Fishery. It was taken Monday July 9th. on Woodstream on the upper river (over 20 miles upstream of the Lodge).

It was caught on spinner by 19 year old Dan Kadlubowski (UK) on his first day ever salmon fishing. He very sportingly released the fish alive. It is also the Second Largest Fish of the Season.

12_koch_120
Stefan Kadlubowski released this 9½ pounder on fly on the Wood Flat on Woodstream.

12_koch_121
There were 3 fish all between 10 - 11lb.caught for 3 rod days yesterday (Thursday 12th.).

12_koch_122
This was 11 years young James Shanahan with his Second Ever Salmon which weighed 11lb. & was taken on spinner at the Junction Pool on Bridgetown Abbey.

He had caught his very First Salmononly 2 days before when he landed a 4.3lb. fish on spinner on Ballincurrig.

12_koch_123Glenda spent half a day guiding a party of  three complete beginners to fishing today (Friday 13th!)- father Padraig & sons James & Eamon O'Keeffe from Glanmire in Cork.

She took them to Lower Kilmurry where two of them caught their First Ever Salmon. This is a very happy James with his 13 pounderwhich took 45 minutes to land.Father Padraig caught a sea-liced 6 pounder.

Both fish were released alive.

The Advantage of a large spread-out FisheryOne of the reasons why we are so successful in catching fish in such conditions is that we havea great variety of fishing on the upper river with our 8 beats spread out
from Ballyhooly to Mallow.Of the 62 fish caught so far for July, just 12 were taken on the lower river where we have 5 beats. The other 50 were all caught on the upper beats.

ProspectsWith the high water continuing into July, excellent runs of fish continue to come in & sea-liced fish are being caught right up to the upper reaches of the river.

There are some excellent quality fish running too, with a lot of those caught being around the 9lb. mark & our best this month is again 13lb.
I have reports at lunchtime today of a sea-liced 6 lb. fish already from Ballyhooly as well as Glenda's party's two fish. Prospects for sport in the coming weeks are absolutely superb!

AvailabilityThere is no problem at the moment for availability for fishing and accommodation in the coming weeks.September is starting to fill up, and availability of self-catering accommodation is already very limited.
We still have space available for the extension of the season to October 12.
