The End of an Era............

Blackwater Lodge & Salmon Fishery finally closes its doors!

Little did I realise when I closed the doors of the Lodge on October 1st. this year that it would be for the very last time. At that stage I was already making plans for the 2016 season.

Only recently did I discover that the melanoma I have been living with since late 2004 has once again appeared as two small tumours. Fortunately, my genetic make-up means that this may well be successfully treated with a new immunotherapy drug called Yervoy. I will be starting this treatment just before Christmas but may also require surgery at some stage next year.

In recent years, running the Lodge has required a very much “hands-on” approach to steer it through difficult times for the salmon angling tourism business.  With the impending treatment regime I cannot commit to continuing in this way, so I have decided that it is time to close the Lodge & concentrate on fighting for good health (& a lot more fishing!) in the years to come.

Blackwater Lodge Guesthouse, self-catering bungalows & freehold fishing rights will be put on the market for sale as a whole or in lots. Please contact me for details if you are interested on:Denne e-mail adresse bliver beskyttet mod spambots. I would like to think that I have been a good ambassador for the Cork Blackwater during the 30 years which I have run the Lodge. But as one era draws to a close, so a new one begins.

My estranged wife Glenda is starting a new fishing & guiding business (Blackwater Salmon Fishing) and will take over the best beats that the Lodge has controlled over the last 30 years. Whilst she will not run accommodation herself, she will offer a network of accommodation providers in the area to include hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs & self-catering cottages.

She has my wholehearted support in this new venture, & has a wealth of experience based on seventeen years at the Lodge.I am sure she will have a long continuing involvement with salmon angling tourism in the Blackwater valley as she is the same age as I was when I bought the Lodge back in 1986.

Best Ever Catch per Rod Day for the Month of July!
The actual number of fish caught for the month was well above average, but the rod effort was however much lower than normal.

The 125 fish were caught for just 216 rod days – a superb average of 0.6 fish/rod day & the highest ever recorded for July.

The Best Ever month of July was recorded way back in 1998 when 296 were caught for 550 rod days. This gives a catch per rod day at that time of only 0.5 fish/rod day.
The Second Best Ever month of July recorded was in 2000 when 263 were caught for 650 rod days. The catch per rod day for that year was even lower at only 0.4 fish/rod day.

Third Best Catch for the Month of July since 2003!
125 fish were caught in total for July. The fly was by far the most productive method accounting for 73 fish.

The Best Day of the Season - which had been recorded on June 28th. when 13 fish were caught - was equalled on July 8th.

We also recorded the Second Best Day for 2015 twice in July - with 10 fish on the 28th. & then 11 fish on the 30th.

The joint Best Fish of the Month at 12lb. were caught by Chris Atkinson (UK) on the fly on the 6th. & Gavin Wishart (N. Ireland) on the 23rd. Both were taken from Lower Kilmurry & both were released.

Current Conditions & Prospects.
The staggering catch statistics for July are even more remarkable when we take into considerationthat the average gauge height at Ballyduff for the month of July was a mere 0.33m.There was no significant flood during the month, & the highest level it reached was 0.60m on the 19th.

Yesterday (Sunday August 2), I recorded 20mm rain on my gauge here at the Lodge.Rain fell right across the catchment yesterday though it looks as if more fell in the middle to lower regionthan fell at the top of the river.

Ballyduff gauge is peaking at 0.51m at 06.00 this morning - up 25cm.The upper river at Millstreet is up 45cm at 06.00 and is still rising.

This rise in the river - coupled with high tides of 4.0m peaking at Youghal today, should encourage the first of the larger autumn fish which are already in the tidal reaches to run into the main river & also bring an even more concerted grilse run.

Availability
There is no problem for fishing & accommodation availability in the coming weeks at the moment.

Now is the time to book your fishing break as there are now only 8 weeks left of the 2015 season.

With the Euro being so weak, exchange rates against the £ sterling, US $ Dollar & other currencies are very favourable, and make a trip to Ireland extremely good value for money at the moment!

Second Best Day of the Season!

Today – June 21 – we recorded the Second Best Day of the Season.

Eight fish (five salmon 7-10lb. plus 3 grilse) were caught for just 5 rod days. One 3 rod party landed 5 on our top beat.

A good number of fish – both salmon & very fresh grilse - were showing on both the upper & lower beats.
We now have 41 fish for the month to date, & 73 for the season so far.

For the first week of June (to Sunday 7th.) we caught 19 fish to 12½lb for 55 rod days.
For the second week, we caught 8 fish to 14lb for just 23 rod days.
For this third week, we caught 14 fish to 10¾lb for 33 rod days.

Prospects

Looking very good for the coming week as fish are now moving in in much better numbers.

Blackwater Lodge - July 1st., 2015

My apologies for sending two newsletters within two days, but there's a good news story to tell!

Please go to my Blog for all the latest news. (click the link)

Best Catch for the Month of June since 2002!The number of fish caught for June this year was 88. This compares to the 10 Year Average of 54 & the Five Year Average of 55.

However, when one considers the angling effort the achievement becomes much more apparent.

  • 2015: 88 fish caught for 179 rod days   ie:   0.49 fish per rod day.

  • 2002: 132 fish caught for 796 rod days   ie:   0.17 fish per rod day.

So the catch per rod day this year was just about 3 times what it was in 2002!

During the month we have also had Joint Best Fish of 2015:  - 14 pounders for Dan O'Keeffe & Cyril Killeen)& the Best day's Catch for One Rod   - six fish for Kieran Conlon yesterday - all released on fly.

We also had all of the top six best day's catches. The fly was the most productive method for the month (& indeed for the season to date).

Let's hope July continues in a similar fashion.

Best Day of the Season - June 30.Thirteen Fish to 8lb. landed - 10 released.

There was a total of just 7 rod days for yesterday - giving an average of almost 2 fish per rod day.

Dave Walsh fished the upper river for a couple of hours in the morning & released a very fresh grilse on spinner on our very top beat 28 miles upriver.

Terry O'Keeffe landed 2 grilse on fly on the middle river from lunchtime on.

On the lower river, Cyril Killeen landed two on spinner - one released & one too deeply hooked to do so.

Chris Kendellen release 2 to 6lb. on fly for a couple of hours fishing in the morning.

Kieran Conlon had an amazing day releasing 6 fish on fly on a single-hand rod..

There was a very good run of grilse coming through Kilmurry in the morning & he was meeting fish almost every run down.

He caught 4 in the morning before it got very bright & then one in the late afternoon & the best fish of the day at about 8lb. at last light.

Prospects
Not withstanding low water, grilse have been running in good numbers & we have high tides peaked from Thursday to Sunday at 3.9m at Youghal.

Highlights:
Best Fish of the Season!Dan O'Keeffe from Cork caught the biggest so far this year which was 14lb. exactly.

The total catch for June so far is 20 fish for less than 60 rod days which is an excellent average.I also heard reports from the upper river of over a dozen fresh salmon (10-12lb.) caught in theLombardstown/Millstreet area in the last couple of days, so they are still running hard.

Prospects:
Looking very good for the coming week as fish are moving in in good numbers& the forecast is dry for the next week or so.
