Spring steelhead arrive in March - Kitimat Lodge

Spring steelhead arrive in March and when they enter the river they are hot to catch on the fly. We drift from pool to pool in 1-2 person rafts in search of the migrating grey ghost.

We recommend a 7 or 8wt single handed or switch rod with a 400-500grain line. Sink tips we recommend 10ft of T14 or Rio multi tip systems for different depths and a proper reel with lots of backing (and a good drag system).

The Kitimat Steelhead like the shallow fast water and you can see them chasing your fly which makes for exciting fishing.
From beginner to seasoned fly anglers we make Kitimat our home river and very convenient for the Kitimat Lodge guests. Having our lodge located near the river is what draws Steelhead anglers to Kitimat.

Our local guides are born and raised on the river and can locate the elusive Steelhead while your take one of our many Steelhead tours.

Take the challenge and book for the month of April. www.kitimatlodge.com

Salmon Junkies highly phrased Steelhead program at Skeena River in British Columbia

Join us chasing the largest and meanest Steelhead in the world, in the company with our long-term BC partner - award-winning Skeena outfitter Nicholas Dean Outdoor.

Imagine yourself airing out a long cast with your Spey rod on one of the Kalum River’s best runs for trophy steelhead, or skating a dry fly across the tailout of a boulder-studded pool on the Copper River for its aggressive steelhead.

Or, try tackling the giant Chinook of the Skeena River, fish of over 60 lbs that can melt a reel with line spooling runs, or sight fishing for acrobatic Coho as they take your fly in a large swirl. All in the shadow of towering, snow capped mountains and untouched coastal rainforests, where bald eagles, grizzly bears and other wildlife still roam free.

Savor the gourmet, home cooked meals or share your day’s stories over a glass of scotch with a few friends as you relax in the comfort of the lodge.

Skeena Fall Steelhead

Looking for the quintessential British Columbia angling experience? If so, this is your great chance. You will fish a number of wild rivers, with a opportunity to fish the remote and intimate upper Copper, a true steelhead Mecca. We’ll swing wet flies and, with favorable conditions, fish dries. Fall-run Skeena steelhead is free-rising and will readily pounce on a waking fly — undoubtedly one of the greatest thrills in fly fishing. This adventure also features the exciting opportunity to fish select lower Skeena streams. And – depending on flows, the scenic Kasiks, Exchamsiks and Exstew.

Steelhead fishing on the Lower Skeena is unparalleled. Renowned rivers such as the Babine, Kispiox, Sustut, Bulkley, Morice, Copper and Kalum enter the Skeena above our camp and all fish bound for these rivers must pass directly in front of us before reaching their spawning grounds.
Only a day or two out of the ocean, at the peak of their size, strength and beauty, these are among the biggest and most aggressive Steelhead on Earth. To hook one of these fish on the fly is to touch the heart of the true wilderness — an experience not to be forgotten!

HOW TO CATCH RECORD SIZED STEELHEAD

During the spring season the Skeena River is quite low. The opportunity to hook numerous Steelhead is a great option as it’s world famous and home to the record size Steelhead you see in many photographs.

Skeena tours are by Jetboat where we fish long runs which hold many Steelhead enroute to their tributaries of birth.

The mountains are painted with snow and the scenery and crisp mornings are a must.

Anglers can make their longest cast with a scandanevian line with a light tip.

Again these Steelhead are fresh and hot and expect your reel to scream once you hookup.

March to May us your best chance and expect the start of the Chinook Salmon that come in May, these brutes top 20-40 pounds of pure silver so your gear has to be in top notch shape.
